The Second Stair Rule: Start Smaller Than You Think
Most plans fail on day three. Not because the people following them are weak, but because the plan was built for somebody else: somebody with free evenings, a gym bag by the door and knees that don’t complain.
So here’s a different rule. Start so small it feels almost silly.
What the second stair means
Picture someone who can’t climb one flight of stairs without stopping halfway. The usual advice sends them to a gym. We’d do something smarter: for one week, the only goal is to stop one step later than usual. The second stair instead of the first.
That’s the whole idea. You don’t need a new life. You need the next step from where you’re standing today.
Why small works better than big
A big plan asks for motivation every single day. Motivation shows up when it feels like it.
A small plan asks for almost nothing, so it survives a bad night’s sleep, a busy Tuesday and a rainy weekend. And a habit that survives the bad days is the only kind that lasts.
There’s another reason. When the step is small, you succeed. When you succeed, you want to come back tomorrow. Small wins are not a consolation prize; they’re the engine.
How to pick your own second stair
Choose something you already do, then add one small notch to it:
- You take the stairs sometimes? Take them once today and stop one step later.
- You sit down to watch TV? Stand up from the chair five times first, hands on your knees if you need them.
- You drive to the store? Park at the far end of the lot.
- You have coffee in the morning? Drink a glass of water before it.
Pick one. Not four. One.
What to do when it feels too easy
Good. Keep it too easy for a full week. Then, and only then, add the next notch: two steps later, seven chair stands, the far end of a bigger lot.
People who skip this week tend to end up back at zero. People who respect it are still going a month later.
What to do when you miss a day
Nothing dramatic. You didn’t fail; you had a day. Tomorrow, do the same small step again. No making up for it, no double dose. The stair is still there.
Your step for today
Choose your second stair now, before you close this page. Write it on a sticky note and put it where you’ll see it tonight.
Outsmart the effort: the smallest step you’ll actually repeat beats the biggest one you’ll quit.
A free head start.
Leave your first name and email and we’ll send you the Second Stair bonus, then one short, practical email a week.
